Jim’s WebLetter for 7/28/12

Hi-ya friends!

It’s another week of “as the world wide Web turns”. This weekend begins the Summer Olympics taking place in London. I have my iPad apps ready and am looking forward to the games. There are so many things happening on the Web, it’s hard to pick just a few to pass along to you, but … Here goes.

We are in the midst of hurricane season, even though you wouldn’t know it by the lack of storms in our part of the hemisphere. That said, Florida Residents, think about what you need before the season really ramps up. http://www.floridadisaster.org/index.asp

Kansas city is the hot spot for the new fiber laid by Google. After cities all over the country attempted to get Google’s attention with such stunts as renaming themselves, unofficially, the search engine’s name. But Kansas City got the nod and now it’s residents can have fiber optic cable laid at the home with the fastest Internet connection anywhere. http://gizmodo.com/5929295/googles-crazy-1000mbps-fiber-internet-connection-is-out-today

Google has added a new feature for mobile searching. Now when you enable handwrite through the search engine’s settings, you can use your finger to write the search you wish to perform. Just go to google.com, tap on the settings icon in the right side, select handwrite and confirm with the button at the bottom. Then, use your finger or stylus and write what you want to search. The text will drop into the google search bar and the search will come up. You will also notice a space bar and a back button will appear at the bottom of the page. Http://www.google.com

Creating a hotspot out of an Android phone. Your Google phone is likely able to perform that function but it comes with a price from your carrier. Now you can do it without having to call and have it turned on. http://blogs.computerworld.com/smartphones/20726/android-wifi-hotspot

Want to store email attachments in the cloud? Now you can store Gmail in Drive, the Google cloud with a simple command. Sync it with directions from their blog … http://blog.insynchq.com/private/qAmrbBksov

Finally, an iPad app to try is the one from Warner Brothers. OutMyWindow is, as they say, is the all in one private way to show your photos to family and friends. It’s a free download and the photo cloud is free too. Check out their website and watch the video … http://www.outmywindow.com

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will go out and buy expensive fishing equipment, stupid-looking clothes, a sports utility vehicle, travel 1000 miles to the “hottest” fishing spot and stand waist-deep in cold water so he can try to outsmart a fish.
Average cost per fish: $395.68
(thanks, Glenn)
The chef of an upscale restaurant collided with a waiter one day and spilled coffee all over the computer. The liquid poured into the processing unit and resulted in some dramatic crackling and popping sounds.
After sopping up the mess, everyone gathered around the terminal as the computer was turned back on again.
“Please let it work,” pleaded the guilt-ridden waiter
A waitress replied, “Should be faster than ever. That was a double espresso.”
(thanks, Robert)
That’s what I have for you this week. Enjoy the weekend, and if you’re like me, watch the Olympics on TV and online. Until next weekend, may God bless you and keep you safe.
