Jim’s WebLetter for 1/26/13

Hi-ya friends!

I hope you’re having a safe and comfortable weekend. Our neighbors to the north here in the states are dealing with severe winter. Neighbors in Europe are dealing with some cold and wet conditions, and in Australia – are you kidding? Summer is either scorching or flooded. I hope you can take some time and review the places I discovered this week on Jim’s WebLetter.

Once there was an online photo editor called Picnik, but they closed down. The developers of the program have created a new and better online program. Picmonkey is a quick and simple image editing tool with some rather interesting extras. This free photo editor has such features as Collage, Touch Up, Teeth Whiten, Fonts, Effects, Filters, Frames, Stickers & more. But it runs on Flash which means iPhone and iPad users can’t use it … just FYI. http://www.picmonkey.com/

At one time, email and texts were the primary means of relaying to friends online about Internet scams to avoid. Now, if you want to read up on the world of scams, Scam Detector explains over 70 different scams and provides advice on how to stay safe. Instead of hearing about a possible scam and having to check with fact checkers like Snopes.com, just rely on Scam Detector for computers, smart phones and tablets. http://scam-detector.com/

Whether you have a PC, Mac, iPad or some Android product, it pays to be smart about protecting your device against viruses and theft. I have been using Lookout antivirus and protection for my Android phones for some time. Now they provide service to IOS devices. I downloaded and installed it in my iPad for added security. Lookout Security for Android and iPhone and iPad. Stop by the Google Play Store or iTunes and download it for free.

Umano offers news and blog stories as read by real people. Now you can listen to stories rather than spending time reading. Umano lets you listen to the audio versions of articles from some of the most popular blogs and online publications out there. By using a browsing function that is separated by interests, you’ll always find something intriguing. There currently isn’t a search function, but compared to the other offerings, it’s not much of a problem. All audio programs are routed through a regularly updated stream, and if you see a publication that you like, you can browse its channel for more articles.

I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in northern Newfoundland. He said that since early this morning the snow has been falling and is nearly waist high. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force.
His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.
He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.
(thanks, Jeff)
My daughter was six and excited about learning all the wonderful things about the world that first-graders learn. She turned to me one day and asked, “Mom, back in the old days when you were a kid, had they learned how to make the wheel yet?”
I replied, “No, Sweetie, back then we were just grateful to have fire.”
(thanks, Kathy)
That’s what I have for you this week … make it a good weekend friends, and until next, may God bless you and keep you safe.
