Jim’s WebLetter for 4/27/13

Hi-ya Folks!

This week, a couple of things got my attention. Google’s cloud service is adding more features that I really like. More information about the new internet known as the Internet of Things. And, a story about a father who did something special for his kids’ lunches. Enjoy this week’s JWL …

Google Drive has gotten yet another improvement. It’s stuff like this that makes me love using this cloud service. It already has the best word/spreadsheet/storage setup because its all connected to Gmail which is also connected to Google Music which allows you to store some 20,000 songs, Google +, and several other equally important and successful applications. But what happened on Thursday puts Drive into a new level … with group chat and profile pictures. See what’s happening? Instead of you going to the cloud, you will do everything IN the cloud.

I know I recently reported about the other internet – the Internet of Things. Separate from the current internet on which the World Wide Web is housed, this new and much more powerful internet is what will be used to run all the devices we use. Unless you’ve done much research on the issue, you’re first thought is, “what’s the big deal”? Matter of fact, it’s a huge deal. As much information that is running on the Web right now will be dwarfed by the enormous amount of data that this second internet will provide. ReadWriteWeb has an excellent article written by Brian Proffitt who has a resume’ that includes authoring some 24 books on mobile technology dealing with what the implications of the new data and what search engines can and cannot handle. Even more are the examples the technology will provide to anyone. http://readwrite.com/2013/04/26/how-the-internet-of-things-will-revolutionize-search

Last, there is a story about David LaFerriere who has been illustrating his kids’ lunch bags with a marker since 2008. He has a collection of the drawings on his Flickr page. Read his story and check out some of his handiwork … this is a cool story. http://mashable.com/2013/04/26/sandwich-art/

Here’s a little tip from me to you as an experienced traveler. Wake-up calls are the worst way to wake up. The phone rings, it’s loud and you can’t turn it down.
I leave the number of the room next to me.
It just rings very quietly and you hear the person next door yell, “Why are you calling me?”
Then you get up and take a shower.
It’s great.
(thanks, Jeff)
The nine-year-old daughter walked in while her mother was getting ready for work.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Putting on my wrinkle cream,” mom answered.
“Oh,” she said, walking away. “I thought they were natural.”
(thanks, Carol)
Just to let you know, there will be no JWL next week as we are taking a few days off and plan to do very little dealing with the internet. Look for a WebLetter on the 11th. Til then, may God bless you and keep you safe.
