Hi-ya friends!

Hope you had a good week. Now with the weekend, there’s much to recap from the tech world. Most of which will be covered in the Web and iTab Magazines you find linked above. But I wanted to pass along a few things in this WebLetter I thought you should know up front. So, read on.

First, with the Ebola outbreak which to date has killed more than 5000 and infected many more, there comes spam email messages. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/10/24/malicious-ebola-themed-emails-are-on-the-rise/?_php=true&_type=blogs&ref=technology&_r=0 At first, it seems hard to believe that spammers would use such tactics to entice people to click a malicious link, but that’s what’s happening. If you get an email that appears to be from the government, or World Health Organization or anyone you don’t know, don’t click the link to get more information or some sort of special message. It’s likely spam and something that could affect your mobile device or computer. Just delete it.

Speaking of email, Google has begun the promotion of a Gmail replacement called “Inbox”. Now, to use the term replacement doesn’t mean they are doing away with Gmail, it means they are offering something that is more social-minded for mobile devices and loaded with intuitive features. Right now, you can see videos of how it works and the Inbox website gives you some details, but right now, it takes an invitation. I sent mine in and received a confirmation of my request, but I’m still waiting on a link. I’ll let you know what it’s like once I get it. http://www.google.com/inbox/

As massive as YouTube has become, it’s always interesting to find someone has a special interest and uses the video platform to build a worthwhile web presence. Such is the case with a dad and his son in the making of SprogTube. Here’s a safe environment for children to watch child friendly videos. All videos on the site have been watched by parents to make sure the content is safe and appropriate. One can search through the large selection or select by topic like comedy, art, music and sports. http://sprogtube.com

Finally, I installed the new IOS 8.1 upgrade in the iPad Air this week and have been tracking new improvements over version 7. There are a large number of changes to the system including easier access to changing the on-screen brightness and the new thing to Apple – widgets. For Android users, we have been using widgets for quite a long time, so it’s great to see Apple embrace them. Of course, they are just a few and can only be accessed with the drop down menu at the top, but it marks an improvement. There are several stories and how-to helps in this week’s issue of iTab Magazine. Click the link … Http//iTab.jimonline.com

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, “I cannot except money from you. I’m doing community service this week.”
The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank-you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. The next day, a cop came in for a haircut, and when he tried to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot take money from you. I’m doing community service this week.” The cop was happy and left the shop.
The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank-you’ card and a dozen doughnuts waiting for him at his door.
That day, a Congressman came in for a haircut and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.” The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.
The next morning when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressman lined up waiting for a free haircut.
(Thanks, dad)

Saving for a new car on a teacher’s salary takes a while. So while I was saving, a mechanic friend loaned me an old junker to use. It was so beat up, even its dents had dents.
I came out of school one day to find a police officer and a woman examining it.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“I saw this lady hit your car,” the cop explained. “But I can’t figure out where.”
(Thanks, Sharon)
