Jim’s WebLetter for 11/29/14

Hi-ya Folks!

I hope you have recovered from your Thanksgiving meal and are enjoying the weekend. Many of you are shopping for those deals to be had. So when you get a chance to pause and read, here’s my collection of sites to explore or bookmark for future reference in this week’s WebLetter.

There seems to be a scheme to have Google search removed from devices we use everyday. Last week I reported on the change from Google to Yahoo in Mozilla Firefox. This week, Microsoft and Yahoo are trying to convince Apple to drop Google for their search system, Bing. Could it be that the Google wall is cracking? Hard to tell at this point, but what is sure is the search wars continue and there is a lot of revenue at stake in the competition. http://www.tuaw.com/2014/11/26/microsoft-and-yahoo-reportedly-trying-to-convince-apple-to-dump/

Find additional stories I discovered this week in WebLetter, the companion magazine to Jim’s WebLetter available at http://Web.JimOnline.com

You may be one of millions who received a notice in the mail about a recall of your vehicle because of a faulty air bag or brakes or any number of issues. If so, you were probably advised to get in touch with a dealer or approved fix it shop to have it repaired. I received such a notice for my car and called, had the part ordered, then made an appointment when I found out the part was in. But what if you haven’t received notification and wonder about your car? Don’t hesitate in finding out if it’s on a list, just hit the Recalls website provided by the federal government. There you can enter your VIN number and get details right away. http://www.recalls.gov/nhtsa.html

With all the hype about Black Friday, not so much is said about Cyber Monday. Why? First, Black Friday follows Thanksgiving Day (or it USED TO anyway). It is also a time for discount everything and based around in-store purchases. Cyber Monday is about electronics purchased online. Now the date is extended in some cases, or begins earlier than Monday in others. Whenever it begins, you may need some guidance in deciding what’s the best electronic device and that’s what is offered in this article by Brian Koerber. Happy shopping! http://mashable.com/2014/11/27/black-friday-vs-cyber-monday/

By the way, if this is your first foray into purchasing online, this article from CNET gives you steps to make your buying experience a safe one. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-shop-online-safely/

On a crisp fall afternoon, a four-year-old boy was helping his father rake leaves in the front yard of their farmhouse. The father glanced up just in time to see a flock of geese flying over and pointed out how they flew in a formation shaped like a V.
The boy patiently watched them as they disappeared over the horizon and then turning, asked, “Do they know any other letters?”

My diminutive Aunt Flora, just four feet, nine inches tall, accepted an offer to visit a health club for a free session. After being greeted heartily, she was shown where she could change and told an instructor would soon be with her.
Having changed her clothes, Aunt Flora went back to the exercise area. Along one wall she noticed a silver bar that was not in use, and decided to try her hand at chin-ups while she waited.
She jumped up, barely reaching the bar, and managed to strain through two chin-ups before the instructor came to her side.
Smiling politely, the instructor said, “If you want to let go of the coat rack and follow me, I’ll be glad to help you get started.”
(Thanks, Jennifer)

Have a great weekend friends and may God bless you and keep you safe.

c-ya!
