Here we are, just days away from a new year and while every publication seems to be looking back over the year, I prefer to look ahead. If you want to see what the highlights of this year were, visit CNN … http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/09/world/2015-in-review-fast-facts/
So what is going on next year? Google is experimenting with artificial intelligence in search. Maybe when using it’s search engine, you’ve noticed that it works to finish what you begin entering. That’s because Google’s massive storage of previous searches instantly sorts through and finds what is likely to be what you mean to ask. Just what artificial intelligence will do to improve search is something only they know, but what is certain is their Labs have been busy and it’s going to improve search in the new year. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-26/google-turning-its-lucrative-web-search-over-to-ai-machines
And millions of dollars are being poured into further developing AI for all sorts of different projects. I read that billionaire rocket builder Elon Musk is putting his money where his mouth is on the subject. This isn’t necessarily to further the use of artificial intelligence as it is to provide safety in its use. As you can see, this is very big and is only going to get bigger. http://fortune.com/2015/07/01/elon-musk-artificial-intelligence/
Two thousand six will be known as the year of the drone. It is estimated that more than a million of them were a Christmas present this year. Knowing it was going to be a big deal and with the issues they have already become for airplanes and commercial flight, the US Government now requires them to be registered before they’re flown. http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/24/technology/drone-faa-laws-registration/
The thing is, these little aircraft are a dream perpetuated. That dream of flying. The Wright Brothers made it famous and years later, we still look for the next thing in flight. Today, drones are used for real estate sales, farm and ranch observations and even to guard and protect investments. And that’s not talking about the expanse in military use. There are some other uses for drones as well … http://www.marketwatch.com/story/6-wild-uses-for-drones-that-arent-just-photography-2015-11-16
We will also see how small satellites will be positioned around the earth to broadcast WiFi for everyone. Elon Musk’s Space-X just launched a rocket and deployed a dozen such satellites before safely returning the rocket in a soft touchdown. http://www.ibtimes.com/elon-musks-spacex-plans-launch-4000-satellites-broadcasting-internet-entire-world-1960546
The trend to internalize security, making the home safe without paying a large company to do the protection will increase. The trend is for people to get away from depending on others for safety, which is why companies like Samsung are selling home security kits. https://shop.smartthings.com/#!/. These kits make your home “smarter” by using sensors to monitor activity in and outside and relay that information to your phone.
And look for 3-D printing to make advances with new materials that are lighter and stronger, communication sources meshing together for easier access to information using any number of devices – particularly smartphones, and virtual reality being used in everything from home repair to emergency surgery.
The new year brings new things. It’s why I like to say it’s a great time to be alive.
That’s it this week and this year, friends and neighbors. Have a great weekend, get ready for 2016 and may God bless you and keep you safe.
