Jim’s WebLetter for 11/12/16

Hi-ya Webfolks!

If you are an AT&T subscriber for internet access, you’re about to find out some not-so-good news. Seems they are going to reduce the quality of your videos you download and watch. This should help them to conserve data and help you avoid running out of your unlimited data allowance. Question: if it’s unlimited, how do you run out of it?
Here’s the real kicker, though. The quality of video continues to improve, but what AT&T is doing is taking its users back to older generation quality and doing it in the name of saving user bandwidth and money. Good news. You can opt out of this. Check this story from Tech Crunch for more about “Stream Saver” … https://techcrunch.com/2016/11/11/att-downgrades-video-quality-on-mobile-with-stream-saver/

Everyone is jumping into Artificial Intelligence and Facebook’s latest AI tech is called Caffe2Go. What it does is add painterly styles and colors over the top of your videos in real time, processing the changes from your iPhone or Android smartphone. Much like the Prisma app, it transfers styles in the app onto any still or moving image. Processing live video normally requires at least a well-equipped PC, but Facebook says they are able to provide AI on some mobile phones faster than an eye blink. Check the video on the page from Engadget and look for the new app coming out. https://www.engadget.com/2016/11/08/facebook-caffe2go-mobile-ai/

Mark Twain once said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”. Many Facebook fans may have been thinking that when they looked at their page recently and saw they were deceased. A glitch from a Facebook bot caused several pages to flip to a memorialized template. Needless to say, it was quickly fixed but not before Facebook frontman Mark Zuckerberg was reported to be history, as well. http://www.forbes.com/sites/kathleenchaykowski/2016/11/11/facebook-memorial-glitch-falsely-presented-many-users-as-dead/#22a7be8030e7
