Jim’s WebLetter for 2/25/17

Hi-ya!

Do you have an email address? Chances are, you do. This WebLetter actually began by sending a weekly issue to email addresses furnished by those interested in receiving it in their inboxes. This before the advent of Facebook and Twitter.

So it struck me kinda funny when I read in the Fernandina Newsleader that the Amelia Island Historic Museum was offering a class in Gmail for people who didn’t have an email address. It’s an hour long class teaching the fundamentals of using Gmail along with the other Google features like Drive for document storage and Photos for picture and video storage. The fee for the course is $15. Or, how about doing something I always say to do when asked a question … “Google it”. http://ameliamuseum.org

The next thing I need to tell you about is a new malware effecting Google’s Chrome browser in Mac and PC computers. It’s called “Font Isn’t Found” and it pops up over the browser and wants you to update your files. Of course when you do, you get hit with malware. According to the article in 9to5Google, no one is sure what damage this piece of malware might do to your computer, but Chrome and Windows Defender are currently not viewing it as malicious and that only a handful of other anti-virus programs were able to detect and remove it. https://9to5google.com/2017/02/23/font-isnt-found-malware-chrome-windows/

The next thing to show you is part of a bigger thing going on, on the Web. My daughter-in-law, Erica sent a link about free lessons being offered by Pixar and Khan Academy who have teamed up to teach the art of story-telling. This isn’t the first course released by this twosome. Pixar’s previous Khan Academy courses include topics like virtual cameras, and effects and animations. This, however is the first to focus on the less technical aspects of movie creation.

Khan Academy has become a clearing house for online education on an ever-increasing number of topics and gives proof to the fact that education can be more easily accessed online than, say going to the neighborhood library or enrolling in college. More than that is the fact that courses offered online provide additional information and training to what is offered in the classroom. So, click the link and learn about Pixar’s classes on Khan Academy … https://techcrunch.com/2017/02/15/pixar-offers-free-online-lessons-in-storytelling-via-khan-academy/?sr_share=facebook

So to sum up this week’s WebLetter … Google it for more information, be careful of warning sign “Font Isn’t Found” and get more training for free with Khan Academy. Now, get busy!

Have a great weekend and may God bless you and keep you safe.
c-ya!
Jim
