Jim’s WebLetter for 8/12/17

Hi-ya iPad owners, gas pump users and Website viewers!

This week’s WebLetter features unrelated stories I discovered while working on the Web over the past few days. Take a few minutes and let me show you what I found.

We’re days away from the official release of IOS 11 for iPhone and iPad and while there are some improvements designated for the phone, this update is really designed to take the iPad to the next level. Features included in the new release … drag & drop capabilities and the Lock screen and Notification Center that are combined into one.  There are new Camera modes and the addition of “driving without distraction” also built in to the new update. Read all about it here … http://www.techradar.com/news/ios-11-release-date-news-and-features#

Information has surfaced on the use of skimmers that have been found at gasoline pumps in some service stations across the country. A skimmer is an illegal device that replaces the legitimate credit card entry point on the pump so, whenever you swipe your credit card, it automatically sends your credit card information to another location by Bluetooth, stealing that information. Now, it has been discovered that by using your cellphone near the affected pump, you can determine if it may be using a skimmer. Pixabay is a Website for sharing high quality public domain photos, illustrations, vector graphics, and film footage. I remember first reporting when Google began it’s Images service years ago. Now Google Images has millions upon millions of images stored. The issue you face, however, is that many of the images could be copy written and therefore, not legal to use without permission.

Pixabay offers over a million free photos and illustrations, and over 3,000 videos. Being public domain means you can download and use them for free, even for commercial use. While Pixabay’s selection may not be as vast as Google Images, the images are free to use without restriction. http://www.pixabay.com

Last this week, do you know what the number one song that was on the radio the day you were born? Playback is a Website that will show you and feature a music video you can watch and listen to the song.

We plugged in dates for our family members and had some memories to enjoy. Dial in the date and see what your parents were listening to when you came into the world. http://playback.fm/birthday-song
