Jim’s WebLetter for 6/20/15

Hi-ya Web Users!
I’m back in front of the screen writing about some of the things that popped up in my view finder this week while I sat beside a lake while my wife fished. Actually I spent more time sitting on a couch or lounging in a chair in air conditioning as the daytime highs were in the mid 90’s most days. Lake Lanier is a nice, peaceful place just north of Atlanta, a not-so peaceful place. I mean what do they do when it’s really busy in the city? The multi lane roads are always packed as it is. We drove down into the city to visit the Georgia Aquarium on Wednesday and had a good time there. https://www.georgiaaquarium.org

On Tuesday we found the AMC Movies in nearby Alpharetta had “Love and Mercy” the story of Beach Boy Brian Wilson playing and I found it to be incredible – language aside. Paul Dano and John Cusack play Oscar rated roles in I’m sure one of the best movies of the year. Too bad it’s in limited release. http://www.loveandmercyfilm.com

I guess one of the stories everyone is reading this week is the one of the Federal Communications Commission going after AT&T for its practice of throttling back speeds for Unlimited accounts. The thinking is, if you’re going to advertise Unlimited, you need to practice it. And they aren’t the only government agency after them … the Federal Trade Commission has already slapped them with a fine. This one from the FCC is for $100 million. If AT&T doesn’t comply, they go to court. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2015/06/17/fcc-fines-att-100-million/28863455/

Call me an old fashioned techie, but when it comes to reading my Gmail, I prefer opening the program in a browser and scrolling down to open those emails I find important to read first, then looking at or deleting or listing as spam the other stuff. I’m not much for importing the emails into a reader. But if everyone felt that way, there would not be use for the other programs on the market. The thing is, there are lots of other options for importing and dealing with your email and this story from Make Use Of gives several options for reading your Gmail on your desktop. I just thought you should know … http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/read-google-mail-desktop/

Why was Mayberry so peaceful? Because hardly anyone was married!  Here are the single people: Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Ernest T Bass, the Darlin family, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara.

In fact, the only one who was married was Otis and he stayed drunk.

Is there a lesson here!

(Thanks, Patricia)

A man is driving down the highway when he sees a shipping truck wrecked on the side of the road, and 25 penguins waddling around outside it. He pulls over and the truck driver tells him, “Quick! You’ve gotta take these birds to the zoo while I wait for AAA!” The man agrees and drives off with the penguins.

After fixing his vehicle, the truck driver heads over to the zoo to make sure the penguins made it safely. There’s no sign of them. The truck driver panics and starts scouring the town for his missing penguins. An hour later he passes by the local cinema, when who does he see leaving the theater but the guy who said he’d help him, 25 penguins still in tow.

“What happened!” the truck driver screams. “I told you to take them to the zoo!”

“I did,” the man answers. “But I had a little money left over, so I thought I’d take them to a movie too.”

(Thanks, Albert)
