Jim’s WebLetter for 11/22/14

Hi-ya friends!

I am always fascinated when looking into the future of technology.  Flash forward to the year 2020 and Japan has been working on the newest tech for the Olympics they are hosting in Tokyo.  Where we are just now beginning to enjoy 4k video which is 4 times HD quality, the Japanese are working on an 8k broadcast transmission.  This video report on BBC tells you more about what they are doing some 6 years before the event.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p029l3hj

I’ve written many times about YouTube and the fact you can find just about everything in video form on the site.  Looking for a favorite song or artist?  YouTube it.  Want to learn how to do some sort of DIY project?  YouTube it.  This aggregated video storehouse is rich in content, even many old classic movies in complete form are there.  Now, an article from Joel Lee at MakeUseOf.com shows you how to set up YouTube for any type of study you want to pursue.  http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-youtube-better-learning

In this week’s issue of WebLetter, Facebook creates a way to say “thanks”,  Amazon moves closer to a free, ad-supported video service, and free tools for YouTube.  http://Web.Jimonline.com

This week, those of us who use the Firefox browser for Internet searches are discovering that the browser is changing it’s default search engine from Google to Yahoo.  Mozilla after a decade sending traffic to Google, concluded it was time for a change.  Speculation behind the change may include security or the fact that Google records everything you do online when you use their search engine, but 3 good reasons provided by this article in MakeUseOf.com makes a lot of sense … http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-compelling-reasons-firefoxs-stance-privacy-worth-paying-attention/

This week, we push the pause button and celebrate Thanksgiving Day this Thursday.  Each year, the Butterball Turkey Hotline takes calls from folks who are in a quandary over preparing the celebratory bird.  Where they answer thousands of calls each year, they sometimes are funny beyond belief.   Here are 14 of the funniest … http://mashable.com/2014/11/21/butterball-hotline-stories/

Tablet owners, this week’s iTab Magazine includes a free app for folks who get stranded called Honk, the best tablet to buy and the story of Apples’ App Store button change.  http://Web.Jimonline.com

Being a teenager and getting a tattoo seem to go hand and hand these days. I wasn’t surprised when one of my daughter’s friends showed me a delicate little Japanese symbol on her hip.
“Please don’t tell my parents,” she begged.
“I won’t,” I promised. “By the way, what does that stand for?”
“Honesty,” she said.
(Thanks, Roger)
Have a great weekend friends, happy Thanksgiving, and may God bless you and keep you safe.
