Jim’s WebLetter for 9/23/17

Hi-ya fellow computer users, Facebook followers and friends!

If you use CCleaner on your PC or MAC, delete it immediately. No, this isn’t a joke. It has been discovered that the software used to clean files and help your computer run faster and more efficiently has been a harbinger for malware. And now we’re learning it is much worse than it initially appeared, according to new evidence. Attackers gained control of the digital signing certificate and infrastructure used to distribute the utility software, which to date, was downloaded more than 2 billion times.

At this writing, we haven’t heard whether there will be an update to remedy the malware break in, but it is best that once you have deleted it from your computer, that you run Malwarebytes to check if your system has been infected. The free version should do the trick, but for a few dollars, Malwarebytes will further protect your computer. https://www.malwarebytes.com

Next, you may have Facebook followers you don’t know about. If you have listed your page as Public, you can expect anyone and everyone to see. But the latest thing going around on Facebook is a “fix” for finding people who are following you that you may not know. The issue is, the method may not work for the heading, ‘Following Me’.

You may have seen the listing on your timeline, “Go to Settings, Blocking and look for Block Users. Type in Following Me”. It shows a list of people who are following you. Most names seem European or from other countries. You must manually block each user individually and it could be lengthy. You can also type in Watching Me and get even more results. You can’t be safe enough on social media sites.

What’s actually happening here is that you are asking Facebook to pull up a list of all Facebook users with the words “following” or “me” in their name. If your profile settings allows followers, you can see a list of your followers by going to your profile, clicking Friends below your cover photo and then clicking Followers. If you don’t have any followers, you won’t see this option. Bottom line, people follow people. That’s why Facebook is called “social media”.

Finally this week, the long awaited and much heralded IOS 11 has been released for iPhone and in particular iPad. This new update is specifically for the power of iPad as it includes more larger-screen features and includes, among other things, Augmented Reality components that are being used in business and many personal environments now.

Where there are many people jumping to update their phones and tablets right now, I am using my plan for updates … waiting for the updates to the update.

You see, the one thing I have learned with software updates is, there are bugs that the manufacturer missed when building such a complicated package. It is only after it’s released to the world, that issues surface. So, I’ll wait and read up on the new features to look for, once the updates subside.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
That’s it this week. Have a great weekend and may God bless you and keep you safe.

c-ya!
Jim
